1972-2003: Our Sunday Visitor, Inc., a national Catholic publishing company (Managing Editor, 15 years; Associate Editor, 16 years)

As Managing Editor of periodicals, I supervised five employees, worked hands-on with 10 periodicals, developing and managing all work-flow schedules. I was a team member in strategic-planning sessions, responsible for securing professional art and photography for most of the periodicals via assigning photographers and illustrators, acquired art using the Internet or telephone, and negotiated fees for a substantially large pool of freelance photographers and illustrators. I also co-managed, with the editor, the department’s operating budget.

In the early years, I oversaw the editorial makeup, copyediting and completion of 16 diocesan newspapers, into which Our Sunday Visitor inserted its “national” edition. I literally formed each and every page of those newspapers by hand with typewriter, paper layouts, tape and scissors. I was responsible for page makeup, copyediting, proofing, final OK and press checks. I also edited numerous books for Our Sunday Visitor.

n AWARDS

As Managing Editor of the nation’s largest national Catholic weekly, Our Sunday Visitor, I was responsible for overseeing the editorial and graphic application of text styles to a new, integrative database platform designed to organize work flow more efficiently. For this effort, I was awarded the “Above And Beyond” award for that year (2001).

I also won many awards for graphic design and cover design with editorial elements from the national Catholic Press Association.

The Open Door (see Interests and Activities, second page), which I co-founded, was awarded the Citizen of the Year award in 2003, sponsored by the Huntington Herald-Press. It recognized the work of the approximately 200 volunteers.

My most recent award was the United Way Chair’s Award, given for excellence and commitment to the United Way as a volunteer. I was part of a four-member marketing team, and I personally designed the message, look, photography and final poster to appeal to the rural community.

n EDUCATION

Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.: English Literature and Clinical Psychology, 1969-1971.

Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Ind.: Accredited classes in Psychology, including Personality and Applied Psychology, 1975: three classes in Folklore, 1995-1998.

Huntington University, Huntington, Ind.: Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management, 2008.; class Valedictorian.

Currently enrolled in a Master Gardener class with Purdue Extension.

n COMPUTER SKILLS

My computer experience includes in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Word, Photoshop, InDesign, Quark Express, Microsoft Power Point and Microsoft Publisher. Some Excel.

I am also very knowledgeable of a database platform from Agile, Inc., called Teambase, the same database used by Time and U.S. News and World Report magazines to organize and manipulate text and graphics files.

n PUBLICATIONS & PATENTS

I was a regularly published columnist for Catholic Parent magazine for 11 years, from 1995 to 2006, a national parenting publication that ceased publishing in the spring of 2006. The name of the column was “Loud And Clear,” in which I reviewed the lyrics to popular music for parents, who in turn could then make informed decisions about which artists and bands their children could listen to. I am currently redefining that column on the Internet as a portal, called Big-Dads-Reviews.com, on which in addition to the review of CDs I intend to include recently released DVDs. It should be available on the Web by May 2007.

I also currently edit books on a freelance basis for my former employer, Our Sunday Visitor Publishing, and other publishing companies. I have edited more than 20 books in the last year.

I possess patent number 6,213,314 for an invention of mine called “Portable Rack For Garden Tools.” I am currently attempting to market it to a national retail outlet, such as Home Depot, Lowes, etc. I have sold about 50 of them locally.

n INTERESTS AND ACTIVITIES

I am an avid gardener, and out of that interest was born the idea for my invention. It allows the gardener to store his/her tools upright while working in the garden, rather than bending down to pick up the tools from the ground.

I enjoy running, and run three to four miles every other day. Seventeen years ago I founded Huntington’s running club, The Kil-So-Quah Roadrunners, which is still active to this day.

I enjoy writing, and as a result of that interest I was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club for 12 years, a literary club, consisting of 25 members and which meets once a month nine months out of the year. I recently took temporary sabbatical from the club to devote energy to completing my bachelor degree.

I co-founded with another Huntington resident The Open Door, a soup-delivery ministry associated with two churches in Huntington. Every Sunday The Open Door volunteers prepare and deliver more than 300 quarts of soup, along with a dessert and a side dish, to those who simply ask for it. No one is turned away. From that ministry grew a furniture ministry, for which I pick up donated furniture and store in a donated warehouse, and deliver free to anyone in need.

I am a former member of Rotary International and an active member of the local Optimist Club, for which I am the publicity contact for local media as well as a board member.

I am a former board member of Huntington’s Forks of the Wabash, an organization that brings awareness of Huntington’s history with the Miami Indians through exhibits, tours and special programs. I also served on the board of the Fort Wayne Press Club.

Current board membership: Board member, Youth Services Board of Huntington County. Board member, Pathfinder Services, Inc., Huntington, Ind.

I have served on the parish council at my church in Huntington for three years.

I also have an inactive real estate license, but I am currently not associated with a broker.

Finally, I have CDL Class A driver’s license with hazmat.

n HOBBIES

I enjoy playing the drums, guitar and harmonica, writing music and listening to music. I also raise bees, which pollinate my garden and yearly provide me with about 30 pounds of honey.

In addition, I practice conservation by planting groves of trees, such as Walnut, Red Oak and Ash. I enjoy raising livestock for my family, and have raised cattle, hogs, chickens, geese, ducks, rabbits, sheep and turkeys. I am also a coin collector.
